PVC quick hoops are easy to build, but they can be crushed by heavy snow in areas with severe winters. If you live in the far north, you may choose to make metal hoops from galvanized electrical conduit (also known as EMT), which costs only a bit more than PVC pipe at your local hardware store. Johnny’s Selected Seeds (www.johnnyseeds.com) sells a Quick HoopsTM Bender for $59 that makes it easy to mold metal pipes into a curve.

Johnny’s recommends using their metal-supported Quick HoopsTM with different types of coverings depending on the season. AG-19 row cover fabric protects crops in spring, AG-15 is an insect barrier in the summer, and a combination of AG-19 and clear greenhouse plastic is used for winter frost protection. This more heavy-duty option has helped gardeners as far north as zone 0a (Northern Canada or Alaska) grow winter crops with ease.
